Hello and thank you! I’m still experimenting with how I use gouache. Right now I actually trying mix some of my gouache with my watercolors. But to answer your question, right now my gouache palette contains these colors. And I use Winsor Newton brand!
Colors I’d recommend for starting out is white, black, red, yellow, blue, and maybe a brown. There’s different versions of those basics colors, so it’s up to you which colors you like the most. :] Winsor Newton has a 6 color starter set if you want to go that route.
I know some artists like to use gouache straight from the tube, but for me I’m really messy and I felt like I was wasting a lot of paint so I decided to pan mine.
Process wise, I tried using mine really watery and then opaque. I’m still experimenting sometimes, but I found out I like to use it somewhere in the middle where it’s more on the slightly opaque side but thin enough that I can layer colors. I can’t really paint full opaque because I never mix enough paint to fill in a area. haha
I hope you have fun experimenting with gouache and figure out what works best for you. Oh! Some weird stuff that happens with gouache is that sometimes the dark colors dry lighter than when they were wet. And opposite for some lighter colors or when you mix with white, sometimes they dry darker than when they were wet. Hope that makes sense and good luck!
